Podcast: State Competition Fierce for Biotech Jobs
This edition of the Virginia Bioscience Podcast features a presentation from August 19, 2008, to the Virginia General Assembly’s Joint Subcommittee on the Biosciences by Patrick Kelly, the vice president of state government relations for the Biotechnology Industry Organization in Washington, DC. BIO represents more than 1,200 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
Mr. Kelly briefed the subcommittee on the current status of the global bioscience industry, why states are competing so aggressively for biotech investment and jobs and where Virginia ranks in various indicators compared to competitor states. The Virginia General Assembly’s Joint Subcommittee on the Biosciences is chaired by Delegate Mark Sickles and Senator Janet Howell. The program lasts approximately 40 minutes. The host is Henry Wixon, a senior partner specializing in intellectual property issues at the law firm of WilmerHale in Washington, DC, and a member of the board of directors of the Virginia Biotechnology Association.
